Abstract
The Common Core State Standards have raised literacy skills for reading and writing to become more rigorous than ever before in the United States. Teachers must be able to present these skills in such a way that students view the skills as important, necessary, and relevant, in order to increase students' motivation for learning. When students' motivation is increased, achievement will likely increase.
In my opinion, literacy is the most important aspect of education, because it provides the foundation upon which all the other subject areas are built. Students are able to increase their knowledge in each subject area by reading about that subject. One of the reasons I decided to pursue the New Literacies and Global Learning program was so I could answer my compelling question -What are effective strategies for increasing student motivation in literacy? I have worked with many students over the years who were already motivated to read by their earlier success with reading skills. There have been others who struggle with reading proficiently, especially many minority and English Language Learners, who were not motivated to read and even disliked reading in general.
Through my course work at North Carolina State University, I have learned the best way to increase motivation in literacy is through the use of Project-Based Learning, Digital resources, Read Aloud/Think Alouds, and Self Choice of Books. In the future, I will take these finding and use them in my own classroom to motivate my students and increase literacy proficiency. I will share these with colleagues and student teachers that I mentor.
