About me
I grew up in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. After graduating from high school at R.J. Reynolds Senior High School, I attended undergraduate school at Appalachian State University where I received a B.S. degree in Elementary Education (k-6). I remained in Boone, North Carolina for three years after graduation and worked for an international relief organization called Samaritan's Purse. It was here I developed a love for people of other cultures and especially those in poverty or hardship. My next life journey included marriage and children when I moved to Raleigh, North Carolina. I taught kindergarten for six years at Grace Christian School and then took two years off to enjoy my young children. I returned to education by entering public school in the form of a teacher assistant for two years in a kindergarten classroom at Underwood Elementary School. In the later part of the second year, I was asked to become the lead teacher of the classroom I was in. I continued to teach kindergarten another two years. Then, when our enrollment changed, I transferred to second grade, where I have remained for the last 10 years.
In the fall of 2016, I enrolled as a student in graduate school at North Carolina State University. I am truly grateful for the knowledge I have acquired in the New Literacies and Global Learning program. I feel I am more prepared to teach literacy and integrate technology than I was before and I look forward to bringing these new skills into my classroom for years to come. While I do not know what the future holds, I envision myself continuing to teach literacy in some capacity, whether to children or adults.
