I worked with a fellow student in the NLGL program to plan intervention lessons for a fifth grade student at a local elementary school for the entire fall semester, 2017, as part of ECI 645 (Dr. Dennis Davis). We organized a thematic unit to encompass word work, reading aloud, reading silently, reading and comprehension strategies, and written response to reading. We recorded her fluency and accuracy scores each week, so we could monitor her progress. Our student was given a choice of topics and trade books to choose from, and she selected "bullying" as her topic. Throughout the unit she worked not only on reading and comprehension skills, but also on a presentation she would make to her parents, teachers, and others in the program. Our student was very motivated by the presentation and was eager to work on it for the last half of our time together.
Other Leadership Experiences
In ECI 508, Teachers and Leaders (Dr. Jill Grifenhagen) I worked with staff from the Marbles Children's Museum to plan and implement literacy activities which would be motivating for children. I directly helped facilitate a writing station where students created booklets and a second station that involved finding letters of the alphabet. I attended the 2018 Interdisciplinary Summit: Strengthening Families, Communities, and the Schools That Serve Them. I also attended a lecture on the topic of The Public School Advantage: Why Public Schools Outperform Private Schools.
